Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.
The site, identified by intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of entry passages down to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the strike was effective," officials stated.
There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.
The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.
Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This action shows British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.
British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their valour," he said. "Including them were thousands of UK service members stationed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."
During December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "major assault" targeting IS targets in the country, after an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The U.N. says Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
