Security Advice for MoD Staff
In a recent appearance on LBC, a defence minister addressed claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been told not to discuss classified information while travelling in Chinese cars.
He stated that the ministry is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, however noted that security is a concern in all contemporary vehicles.
Our department has a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a tiny fraction.
However whether you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our people is not to plug MoD technology into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a secret level in any car, because of the growing risks of surveillance that are present in every single automobile, to restrict those confidential conversations in secure locations. That’s a wise and reasonable thing for everyone worried about safety.
After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the moment.”
