The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a major prize-giving event approaches, there’s always a clamor for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories actually cover many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition completely during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent compact experiences, however the design in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles in the world and have been for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
